Recently I feel like there have been an influx of “Make at home pre-portioned meals”. Everything from the celebrity endorsed Hello Fresh, to the incredibly health earth muffin brand Blue Apron. I had decided right before I had Kensington to sign up for one so that I wouldn’t have to go to the grocery the first few weeks after I had her. After looking at all the different menus and pricing I had decided on Plated.
Their menu seemed the most “normal” for a semi-foodie like myself (no raw quinoa and beets here) but totally delicious. The food comes in a freezer pack lined box once a week with printed step by step instructions and pre-measured quantities. All you have to do is cut up the produce, season the meat, and cook it all. For someone like me who LOVES to cook but HATES the grocery store with an unmitigated passion, put simply – It’s Perfect.
I decided to showcase making one of my meals this week which happened to be steak quesadillas with chimichurri and roasted poblano salsa (see? Sounds yummy right?). Each week that the box comes there are roughly 10 “changing meals” to choose from in addition to 6 “Monthly encore meals” that don’t change. It means I get to try things like making egg rolls, curry chicken, and empanadas but can also just get mexican style burgers or breaded chicken breasts if I want to. So far about 90% of the meals we’ve gotten we would get again, and the ones we wouldn’t is mostly because we like REALLY spicy (this is Texas after all) and some of the recipes are too mild for us. The only other draw back I can see is that there aren’t a ton of vegetarian options. Theres at least 3 each week but if you are veggie I might recommend going with a specifically vegetarian company instead (like this hello fresh option or the Purple Carrot). Ultimately we really enjoy it – it makes us look forward to the nights where I will be cooking.
